Voyeur by Kelly Spike

Judge’s comments: “Voyeur by Kelly Spike, presents a bold immersive intimacy you can not shy away from. Giving us a genuine behind the curtain voyeuristic view, we see a ghostly figure emerging from the darkened alcove of a shower. Sealed in with a plastic sheet, moisture and emotions are the same, unsure whether they should be released. Self contained in this private place, you relate to those moments we have alone in the shower; thoughtful, lost in imaginings, real or not. This piece shows the conflicting paths our minds spiral into, totally absorbed, when we are alone. This piece spoke to me through its colour tone, stunning composition and incredible storytelling.”

And Breathe by Laura Minter-Goodchild

Judge’s Comments: “Your eye is drawn to the quiet joy within in this image. The tone and composition so beautifully balanced. Regardless of the busy hospital environment, we’re given a glimpse at a moment after a life changing event. Blissful and content, this piece allows us to witness an incredibly personal, intimate, moment of mother and child in a place inevitably designed for surgical efficiency, transforming it completely.”

Take me to the water by Elsie Garner

Judge’s Comments: “An expanse of ocean, juxtaposed against the vastness of the sky, we are in the cool grey of the waters alongside one soul. Caught off guard and mesmerised by the sunlight breaking through the slate coloured clouds, we witness an ever moving moment frozen in time. Though an initial feeling of isolation washes over us, as we glance at the silhouette of the swimmer, a notion of peace with nature is left with us.”

HONOURABLE MENTION

Distraction by Katie Rowland

Judge’s Comments: “This deserved an honourable mention as the we adored the stark use of contrast. The two subjects within this piece, one demanding attention, while the other is quietly distracted by their phone, to me, represents how we all have our own inner worlds regardless of environments.”

Derelict Care Home by Theresa Norman-Downson

Judge’s comments: “What is so striking about this photograph is the way it allows layers of narrative to build. The fragments of details seen across the composition lead the viewer to piece together a multitude of histories, which in turn takes the space beyond dereliction.”

Little Red Berries and Broken Glass by Alice Chapman

Judge’s comments: “The relationship between the berries and broken glass works really well here; visually they almost mimic each other, and yet in terms of connotations they are arguably opposites. The way lighting and the overall scene has been considered enhances the space and made this photograph a stand out.”

RUNNER UP

Monster House by Izzy Field

Judge’s comments: “There is an overriding emotional tone to this photograph which is incredibly intriguing. The way we are drawn towards a space we cannot see into starts to build a narrative. And this unknown, with all the feelings that conjures, is complemented by the layers of reflections and shadows, and what we can and can’t see across the rest of the composition.”

HONOURABLE MENTION

The weight of summer leaves its impression by Luke Psaros

Judge’s comments: “I really wanted to celebrate the creativity displayed in Luke’s work. This multidisciplinary approach to photographic art is bold yet playful, and the overall aesthetic invites us to create connections between the mediums used in addition to what has visually been created.”

Mimi Project by Mimi Doncaster & Richard Talbot

Judge’s comments: “I loved the layers of this image and the blending of text with imagery to create something more powerful than the sum of its parts. My hope is viewers take the time to read this image, then read it again to absorb its intricacies.
